- Explanation of an epidural procedure
- The spine is made of many parts. The spine contains spinal fluid and no fluid is ever injected into this space.
- The spinal cord containing the spinal fluid is protected by a sheath of duramater.
- Another sheath around the duramater is called the epidural space with epi meaning above the duramatter.
- During an epidural procedure, a fluid is injected just above the duramater into the EPIDURAL SPACE and NOT into the spinal fluid column.
- A doctor must be very careful to inject a fluid into the epidural space and not into the spinal column fluid.
