Explanation of an epidural procedure

  • The spine is made of many parts. The spine contains spinal fluid and no fluid is ever injected into this space.
  • The spinal cord containing the spinal fluid is protected by a sheath of duramater.
  • Another sheath around the duramater is called the epidural space with epi meaning above the duramatter.
  • During an epidural procedure, a fluid is injected just above the duramater into the EPIDURAL SPACE and NOT into the spinal fluid column.
  • A doctor must be very careful to inject a fluid into the epidural space and not into the spinal column fluid.
